Description:
Rare Penobscot Wampum Collar. Circa first half of 19th century or earlier. Wampum strung on hemp with severn pairs or diagonal lines and a corresponding number of crosses.
Provenance: Provenance: Dr. Frank T. Siebert Collection, acquired by Dr. Siebert in 1940; From the Estate of Francis Stanislaus, Sylvia Stanislaus shown wearing the necklace in a photograph taken in 1875, also pictured in a photograph of Mary Balase taken in 1865 at the age of 95.
Previously illustrated in the National Museum of American Indian catalog no, 020079.000. Recently appraised at $20,000 to $30,000 and sold through the Skinner Auctioneers for $10,073.00.
